Illegal Zimbabweans to be deported

Undocumented Zimbabweans still in South Africa by the end of the government’s amnesty period in July will be deported, home affairs said on Thursday.

When the July 31st deadline expires, undocumented Zimbabweans will be given a grace period prior to deportation being resumed.

From October 2010 the South African Home Affairs has been involved in an exercise to legalise the stay of the estimated 1 to 3 million Zimbabweans currently living in South Africa.

On Thursday, the department said 133 331 permits had so far been issued to Zimbabweans. However, not all applicants had collected them. Home Affairs is currently encouraging Zimbabweans who have received sms’ to that regard to come forward and collect their permits.
