Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s arrest imminentPosted: July 6, 2011
The Star newspaper reported that police planned to arrest Thuli Madonsela on charges of fraud and corruption.
The charges stem from work amounting to R1.8 million that she did for the SA Law Reform Commission (SALRC) whilst under their employ.
Responding to the claims, Madonsela told The Star she never concealed her company from her employers. Her company was never paid more than R500 000 for many assignments it did for the justice department.
Questions are being asked about the timing of this probe. It comes as she is scheduled to brief the media on several investigations that involve the police.
She is currently currently finalising reports about contracts police entered into to lease new headquarters in Pretoria and Durban, for R500m and R1.1 billion respectively. In her preliminary report, Madonsela found Police Chief General Bheki Cele guilty of maladministration for his role in the leases.
It is sad to see such accusations leveled against high profile people (both sides) whose work is to ensure our safety and that South Africa is squeaky clean.
